WESTMINSTER, Colo – On Wednesday, April 22, just after 3:30 a.m., officers with the Westminster Police Department responded to a call from family members regarding an individual in crisis at a house in south Westminster.
Upon arrival, officers located a 23-year-old man who was experiencing a mental health crisis and had access to harmful substances in his possession. During the encounter, the man was in imminent danger and continued attempts to harm himself. Officers took immediate action, placing him in protective custody, to prevent further harm. The individual was quickly transported by medical personnel to a local hospital. He was later pronounced deceased.
WPD activated the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In accordance with department policy, the two officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. This is standard practice any time an officer is involved in a critical incident involving a death or serious bodily injury.
The official cause of death and identity of the deceased will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.
