WESTMINSTER, Colo -- Recently, Westminster City Council voted to amend the municipal code regarding the sale and possession of animals, specifically chickens. Here’s what backyard chicken owners, or those considering getting chickens, need to know:
If you want backyard chickens in Westminster, you must have a valid city permit and follow the applicable coop requirements, along with other requirements that were already in place.
The biggest change? The maximum number of chickens allowed per lot.
Maximum Number of Chickens Per Single-Family Detached Lot:
- 1/4 acre or less: 6 chickens
- 1/4 acre to 1/2 acre: 12 chickens
- 1/2 acre to 3/4 acre: 18 chickens
- 3/4 acre to 2 acres: 24 chickens
- 2 acres or more: 30 chickens
