WESTMINSTER, Colo -- Tis the start of baby wildlife season!

Last week Animal Management Officer (AMO) Wood responded to a call from a local auto shop after a litter of baby squirrels, and their mom, were discovered under the hood of a vehicle. The little stowaways had unknowingly hitched a ride to the shop inside the engine compartment.

When the hood was opened, mom quickly took off but stayed nearby. Officer Wood set up a squirrel reunion box to keep the babies warm and safe while waiting for her to return. Staff even played baby squirrel sounds in hopes of luring her back. Unfortunately, mom never came back for the reunion.

Whenever possible, our goal is to reunite baby wildlife with their mother, as they have the best chance of survival when raised naturally. When that’s not successful, the babies are transferred to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator who can provide the specialized care they need.

Thanks to the team Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, these little ones are now in good hands.
